Avocado Experiment

Are you looking for ideas for a senior project that can be enjoyed alone or shared with grandchildren? Here's an idea I stumbled on. On May 5th, I wrote a blog talking about not giving up too soon. And I said I'd share a little later how the avocado plant is doing. Here she is in all her glory! I wrote that article to point how what can happen if you don't give up. After all we have become accustomed to looking for quick fixes. When raising plants, we sometimes forget that plants don't operate that way.  Whey plants look [Click here to see the rest of the story]

Writing, song, dance, and  all other creative arts are built in youth but enhanced with age.  When I was a teenager, I was absolutely certain about everything. Life was simple then. Writing was relatively easy. All that was necessary was to copy the formulas and rules set forth by our peers and teachers. Writing simply was the act of putting on paper whatever was acceptable to others. Then I had children. They taught me to see life through a completely different prism. Now is your time to shine. Don't believe me? Check out what your peers are doing right now. Get [Click here to see the rest of the story]

Even if you are living in a condominium in Chicago you can enjoy nature in all its glory. Kitchen gardening yields some delightful surprises without regard to unseasonably cold weather. Geraniums Come To Life This is last year's seed Geranium. I was certain it wouldn't survive but decided to see what would happen with a little patience. I kept it in a sunny window and nurtured it with water and MiracleGro. Today, it's 33 degrees, unseasonably cold for this time of year – even in Chicago. But that's ok. In my kitchen I'm enjoying Spring in all its glory and [Click here to see the rest of the story]

Chicago: Spring's First Robin

Don't let the cold weather this weekend discourage you. Spring really has arrived in Chicago. Sadly, I didn't have my camera handy when I left the house this morning so I don't have a picture. But I saw my first robin of the season today. It was the most beautiful robin I've seen in a long, long time. This bird was obviously well fed and it breast was a vibrant red that was glorious against the still winter-brown lawn. I decided to do some research and, lo and behold, I discovered that robins can actually be seen all winter long [Click here to see the rest of the story]

The Union fight in Wisconsin and elsewhere is one symptom of an illness that plagues us all.

Questions to ask after the election. We elected representatives to work for us. Do we know where they are and what they’re doing? Do they?
