Chicago: Spring’s First Robin

Don’t let the cold weather this weekend discourage you. Spring really has arrived in Chicago.

Sadly, I didn’t have my camera handy when I left the house this morning so I don’t have a picture. But I saw my first robin of the season today. It was the most beautiful robin I’ve seen in a long, long time. This bird was obviously well fed and it breast was a vibrant red that was glorious against the still winter-brown lawn.

I decided to do some research and, lo and behold, I discovered that robins can actually be seen all winter long in Chicago. You can’t prove it by me. I’ve never seen a robin in the snow here in Chicago. Nevertheless, it seems that while our robins do tend to migrate to warmer locations in the winter months, there are actually Canadian robins that hang out around here during the winter. Goes to show that we’re never too old to learn something new.

Even so, I maintain that this robin is my confirmation that winter is at an end – despite the freezing weather conditions we’re experiencing this weekend. So, Seniors, get out your walking shoes. We’re headed toward some gloriously beautiful days and you want to be ready to enjoy them.

I missed a picture of this very special bird first time I saw him. But just a couple days later, he was back to greet me when I parked my car. I got this first picture…

And then, as if he knew he was “on stage” he turned and posed for a second shot.
